Lasar Segall (b. ; d. 2 August ), Brazilian painter considered the pioneer of expressionism in Brazil. Born in Vilna, Lithuania, Segall moved to Berlin at the age of fifteen and studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts from to , the year he was expelled for participating in the Freie Sezession, an exhibition by artists opposed to official aesthetics.

In he moved to Dresden to study at the Meisterschüle (Art Academy).

A year later he joined the German expressionist movement, and in made his first trip to Brazil.

In Brazil from to , Segall prompted controversy over expressionism when his work was displayed in at solo exhibitions in São Paulo and Campinas.

In he returned to Brazil and became a citizen. His paintings of Brazilian themes (–) were exhibited in in Dresden, Stuttgart, and Berlin. From to he lived in Paris. Segall returned once again to Brazil in , when he cofounded the São Paulo Society of Modern Art.
