After graduating from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Johns Hopkins University, he pursued a career in teaching and management in his hometown.
Birth of the Automobile
In 1893-1894, Haynes's fascination with locomotion led him to design and build the first "horseless carriage" in Kokomo, Indiana.
It featured a single-cylinder engine and could reach speeds of up to 10 mph. The vehicle was showcased at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
